Do You Really Need 10,000 Hours to Become an Expert?
The 10,000-hour rule offers an appealingly simple answer to a complicated question: how long does it take to become an expert? But research on expert performance does not support a universal threshold. In this episode, Tara looks at how deliberate practice relates to performance across music, sports, games, education, and professions — and why people can reach similar levels with very different practice histories. The episode also considers what practice quality, feedback, starting age, individual differences, and access may add to the picture. The goal is not to replace one magic number with another, but to understand what the research can and cannot tell us about becoming genuinely good at something.
